Karen Biestman returned to the Stanford NACC Directorship on March 26, 2018!
Previously, on June 20, 2017, Karen Biestman announced her resignation as the Associate Dean and Director of the Stanford Native American Cultural Center. Biestman accepted a position as Special Assistant to the Provost on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Title IX Director at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, California effective June 26, 2017.
In her message sent to current students, staff, and alumni, Biestman cited her time at Stanford as “the joy of [her] professional career,” and praises student efforts to “model the ideals of community, excellence and resilience.”
In her 6 years at the helm of Stanford’s Native community, Biestman was a tireless advocate for student presence and agency, both in our own community and beyond it. We thank her for her servant leadership and graceful guidance to forge strong partnerships between the Stanford community, tribal organizations, and Native alumni network.
This professional transition allows Biestman to be closer geographically to her family, especially her two young grandchildren. Biestman will remain a part of the Stanford faculty, and plans to teach courses in CSRE/Native American Studies in winter and spring quarters.
